Possessing lace-like qualities, this project is a bit more organic than many of the others. Airspace Tokyo by Beige Architecture and Proces2 attempts to create a layering system that blends the artificial with the natural, while maintaining a response the programmatic requirements of the inhabitants.

The exterior building skin is conceived as a thin interstitial environment, which articulated densities of the porous and open-celled meshwork are layered in response to the inner workings of the building’s program.

AirSpace is a zone where the artificial blends with nature: sunlight is refracted along its metallic surfaces; rainwater is channeled away from exterior walkways via capillary action; and interior views are shielded behind its variegated and foliage-like cover.

The fact that architecture is deriving inspiration from the foam-like membrane structures of cells is ironic since the word cell in biology derives from the architecture of monks cells in monasteries. Cell structures have come full circle with innovative structures at all scales, from metalized foam or ceramic foam structural materials to computer derived lattices based on mathematical cell properties.
